![]() ![]() This approval will now allow current and future eligible students of this school to receive G.I. Once completed, I wrote a letter to the principle and thanked her and members of her staff for the support and assistance they provided during the arduous process of getting the High School approved by the state's Higher Education Commission for Veterans Education Programs. She did receive the back pay back to January. I believe I started working with the school counselors starting in October and I recall her getting approved in March. It was her senior year and she would turn 18 in January of her graduating year. I know they had to get the principle's permission who was fully supportive of this initiative. But the months in high school do not count against the 45 months your child will receive for college.ĭuring the time I was working on getting my daughter's school certified, she was actually working in the guidance counselor's office for one hour each day during the week, so I would think this definitely help when I approached them for assistance. Keep in mind that if Chapter 35 benefits are elected while in high school, you will forfeit the compensation for schoolchildren over 18 (currently at $260.13 for 100% disabled veterans). Hopefully, your school is already approved by the VA and you can bypass this step. I thanked them continuously during the process as it is somewhat difficult for the high school counselor(s) to take time away from their job and train on how to certify students for Chapter 35 benefits. It is an arduous process and I frequently corresponded with the high school administration while the process was ongoing. ![]() I recall the high school administration had to fill out documentation provided by the State Higher Education Commission and complete over 10 hours of certification training prior to getting approved by the VA. I did contact the Higher Education Commission in the state I reside and inquired on the process also which they indicated would start with the high school my child was attending. Please email or call 40 to schedule an appointment for assistance with VA benefits and federal student aid. All students are encouraged to apply for federal financial aid each year by submitting the FAFSA. When I called the 888-GI Bill number, they informed me they could not speak with me reference this matter because my daughter was over 18 and that a VA Form 21-0845 was required to be submitted which my daughter would authorize discussions between the VA and myself. I filled out the form, had my daughter sign, submitted and was able, and still am able to discuss educational benefits with the VA concerning my daughter. During the process of getting her Chapter 35 benefits while in high school, I recall doing an initial inquire at h ttp://.gov/weamspub/buildSearchInstitutionCriteria.do jsessionid=qtMbSxQFpzyL7GpnQrtnNGv6G9CGQQvb2YqM9Cvw3vB2pv2lXhfJ!-1531379871 to see if my daughter's high school was already approved by the VA, which it was not. The Office of Financial Aid processes your benefits and can help answer your questions. When I initially looked into this, I found out my daughter's high school was NOT approved by the VA. I went through the same thing a couple of years ago and can provide some of my experience. ![]()
